How to improve patient adherence and experience during the diagnosis and treatment

Submission deadline: Saturday, 1 June 2024

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection related gastrointestinal (GI) and extra-GI diseases are a tremendous healthcare burden worldwide. Expert consensus reports informed by large scale investigations have recommended the prevention and eradication of H. pylori infection in order to reduce the risk of complications, especially peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. It is well-recognized that household family members are also at risk for H. pylori infection and thus disease complications. However, how to effectively engage patient and family members to participate in the testing and treatment processes remains a challenge.

Patient adherence and motivation, including their comprehension, and willingness to participate in decision-making processes are crucial for successful treatment and follow up. The recently introduced “family-based H. pylori infection control and management” strategy in China has provided an example on how to curb H. pylori intra-familial spread and enhance patient adherence.

H. pylori infection status varies greatly among different geographic areas. In this call for manuscripts, Helicobacter journal intends to gather global research and dedicate one special issue on how to improve patient and/or family engagement and participation to improve outcomes when managing H. pylori infection. The journal welcomes original research, opinion reviews, meta-analysis and other types of studies. Investigations addressing H. pylori related transmission, familial epidemiology, and family-based management are also welcome.

The submission process follows the Helicobacter journal website Author Instructions. There are four guest editors—one from the East (China) and three from the West (U.S.) who will be in charge of the manuscript review, revision and acceptance processes once granted by the Editor-in-Chief. Please ensure all relevant submissions that are in response to this call for manuscripts are acknowledged in the cover letter.
