RESEARCH ARTICLES

Barrier and structural properties of polyethylene terephthalate film coated with poly(acrylic acid)/montmorillonite nanocomposites

  • Pages: 141-150
  • First Published: 22 November 2020
Description unavailable

PAA/MMT nanocomposite was coated on the corona-treated PET film to improve the barrier properties. A 300-W microwave treatment was most effective for size reduction and good dispersion of MMT particles. The water vapor and oxygen barrier properties of PET films were enhanced by PAA coating. Moreover, the oxygen permeability of PET films decreased via coating by PAA blended with 1 and 3 wt.% MMT.

Development of new active nanocomposite packaging films containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane for walnut (Juglans regia L.) kernel packaging

  • Pages: 151-160
  • First Published: 02 December 2020
Description unavailable

Active nanocomposite films made from LDPE and POSS nanoparticles. The best antioxidant activity is determined in NP-POSS including films.QA-POSS and NP-POSS additive for LDPE packaging film could have potential for protect lipid oxidation.

Applicability of oxygen scavengers for shelf life extension during illuminated storage of cured cooked meat products packaged under modified atmosphere in materials with high and low oxygen permeability

  • Pages: 161-173
  • First Published: 19 December 2020
Description unavailable

Two types of cured cooked meats were packaged in high- and low-OTR packages, either with or without an oxygen scavenging sticker. The samples were stored at 7°C either in complete darkness or illuminated by fluorescent or LED lamps for the last 48 h of storage. Inclusion of an oxygen scavenger may lead to improved colour stability and lower lipid oxidation, provided that the packaging material had a sufficiently low OTR and some days of dark storage preceded illumination.

The effect of flexible sealing jaws on the tightness of pouches made from mono-polyolefin films and functional papers

  • Pages: 175-186
  • First Published: 06 January 2021
Description unavailable

The use of an elastic membrane on one side of the tools in the heat sealing process reduces the leakage of flexible packaging solutions made from monopolymer or paper-based films. The redirection of local pressure at the layer jump, achieved by indentation of the three- or four-layer section into the elastic membrane, reduces the size of capillaries. This technological approach enables a reduction of flowable sealing medium in sealing applications including layer jump sections.

Enhanced mechanical and antioxidant properties of biodegradable poly (lactic) acid-poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) film utilizing α-tocopherol for peach storage

  • Pages: 187-199
  • First Published: 28 December 2020
Description unavailable

PLA-based films were modified and prepared by blending and casting methods. Physical, thermal and antioxidant properties of the film were characterized. PLA-PHB-α-tocopherol film effectively inhibits the decay and extends the shelf life of peaches as demonstrated by LF-NMR analysis.
